The oil and gas pipelines crisscrossing the Arabian Peninsula rely on Impressed Current Cathodic Protection, or ICCP, to prevent corrosion. Every couple of dozens of kilometers along the pipeline, a station the size of a van keeps the metal structure exposed to electrical current. Particularly if they integrate PV arrays, these facilities need batteries able to withstand both the extreme heat of the day and the bitter cold of the night. A single-track line starting from the Atlantic port city of Veracruz cuts through some of the most remote and challenging terrains in Mexico.
