The oil and gas pipelines crisscrossing the Arabian Peninsula rely on Impressed Current Cathodic Protection, or ICCP, to prevent corrosion. Every couple of dozens of kilometers along the pipeline, a station the size of a van keeps the metal structure exposed to electrical current. A single-track line starting from the Atlantic port city of Veracruz cuts through some of the most remote and challenging terrains in Mexico. Fitted across roughly two hundred locations along the railway, these rugged systems work flawlessly in a very wide range of temperatures, dust, and heavy vibration without requiring any serious maintenance effort.
